Labor Unit (Arbeitswert, AW)
The labor unit (Arbeitswert, AW) is the calculated time unit used by German repair shops and assessors to measure the labor involved in a vehicle repair. Together with the hourly labor rate (Stundenverrechnungssatz), it forms the basis of labor cost calculation.
What does labor unit mean?
The labor unit (Arbeitswert, AW) is a unit of time used to calculate the labor required for repair and maintenance work on a vehicle. Instead of estimating working times freely, repair shops and assessors rely on manufacturer time standards (Herstellervorgaben) that assign a specific number of labor units to each work step – for example, replacing a bumper.
How many labor units correspond to one hour is not uniformly regulated: depending on the manufacturer and system, one hour often equals 10 AW (1 AW = 6 minutes) or 12 AW (1 AW = 5 minutes); other divisions also exist. To understand a calculation, the underlying time base is therefore always decisive.
Labor unit and hourly labor rate
Conceptually, the labor costs of a repair result from two factors:
- the number of labor units specified by the manufacturer for the individual work items, and
- the price per labor unit, which is derived from the workshop's hourly labor rate.
In simplified terms: labor costs = number of AW × rate per AW. The hourly labor rate differs considerably from region to region and also varies between brand-affiliated and independent workshops as well as between trades such as mechanics, bodywork and painting.
Role in the damage assessment report
In the damage assessment report (Schadengutachten), the assessor usually calculates the repair costs using recognized calculation systems that incorporate the manufacturers' AW standards. The following applies:
- The manufacturers' labor time standards ensure an objective, verifiable calculation.
- The hourly labor rates applied are usually based on the rates customary in the region or on the specific repair shop.
- Additional work such as color matching, vehicle transfer or the calibration of driver assistance systems is itemized separately.
Especially in the case of a fictitious settlement (fiktive Abrechnung) – claiming compensation on the basis of the assessment without having the repair carried out – insurers scrutinize the applied rates and work items closely; a transparent AW calculation makes the report robust.
Practical example
After a parking lot collision, the door has to be replaced and adjacent parts repainted. The assessor takes the manufacturer standards from the calculation system: a specific number of AW for removing and installing the door, further AW for paint blending and assembly work. Multiplied by the regionally customary labor rates for bodywork and paintwork, this yields the labor cost share of the repair calculation – transparently broken down by work item.
Relevance for claimants and assessors
For claimants, it is important to understand that different AW time bases and hourly rates make calculations difficult to compare. A low price per AW can be put into perspective by a different time base.
For assessors, the correct application of manufacturer standards and regionally customary rates is a mark of quality. Deviations – such as necessary additional work not covered by the standard times – should be justified in the report to prevent deductions.

Are the manufacturers' AW standards binding?
They are the recognized calculation standard but do not cover every individual case. Difficult working conditions, corrosion or additional testing and calibration work can make justified deviations necessary, which the assessor documents.
